I read this 10 years ago and I remember I really enjoyed it at the time. It's a compelling page-turner and a few times, I was actually holding my breath. It's almost a thriller of a fantasy. But for some reason, I never felt like reading the rest of the series. I actually have the second and third books, but I haven't picked them up.
