I read about half of this book and had to give it up. It's engrossing and well-written, but I already knew too much. I had read the sequel, "The Glass of Time," first, not realizing it would ruin the first book for me (I think I thought it was more of a companion book, not a direct sequel). This is too bad, because I can see that this first one is the better book. He was sick during the writing of this book, but was on a prescription that gave him a lot of energy. The second book was very enjoyable, but he was getting sicker and sicker and died not too long after the second book was published and because of that, it had a rushed feeling at the end.
